Winter Maintenance: Salt Spreading & Snow Clearing

Winter has soon come around in the UK, and as the days become darker, colder and harsher, it is important to be well prepared for snow, even if we don’t see much of it! Whether you need to keep campus walk ways clear or need to make the roads safer, utilising salt spreading and snow clearing equipment can make all the difference to maintaining operations! In this article, we are going to provide an overview of salt spreading, highlight its importance, and show you how our hire attachments can offer a quick and easy solution to your problem.

Types of Salt for Spreading

There are two main types of salt that can be used to manage roads and pathways on snowy or icy days. The first one is rock salt (commonly known as grit salt), and is a brown-coloured substance. This salt is very inexpensive, however it does come with some disadvantages, including:

  • Leaves behind a messy residue
  • Can cause corrosion
  • Detrimental to vegetation
  • Not as effective as marine salt

The second type of salt is called marine salt (or white salt). Marine salt is white in colour and is highly concentrated, meaning that is excellent at de-icing. This salt is also 100% soluble, leaving no mess in its wake, meaning that residue cannot enter drains and cause corrosion or blockages. This salt is far better for the environment and is more sustainable than other types of de-icer salt.

The Importance of Salt Spreading

When managing a site, campus, roadway, walkway or any other heavily populated and used place, ensuring safety and accessibility is paramount. As we move deeper into winter, the chance for ice or snow only increases, and although this can create some stunning scenery, it also brings an element of danger.

If roads are not properly de-iced, a number of safety concerns appear. First, roads and pathways can become extremely slippery, increasing the chance for accidents and injuries to occur both on-foot and in-car. Beyond this, snowy and icy roads will mean that traffic moves far slower and builds up, meaning that not only do people become late, but frustration grows and can lead to rash decision making, further increasing risk to the population. Maintaining operations and accessibility is also vital, and can only be achieved by salt spreading and snow clearing during icy months.

When salt spreading, it is always best to be prepared and spread your salt before snow or ice is expected. By doing this, it will mean that ice or snow does not have the chance to set or form. Preventing the issue before it begins is the is the most cautious and effective approach and will help to reduce risk and improve accessibility and safety for all.

How Can Ace Plant Help?

We understand that investing in a salt spreader is a big commitment - that's why here at Ace Plant we offer both salt spreaders and snow clearing equipment for hire.

The two salt spreaders that we have on offer are the GDS250R and the MS800 (3-point-linkage mount). The GD250R salt spreader is incredibly simple to use and are very effective. The salt spreader can simply be loaded with salt (even wet rock salt) and ensure that the attachment is set to spread mode and begin spreading salt.

The MS800 salt spreader is a tractor mounted spreader that comes with a hopper that has a capacity of approximately 1000kg of salt, ideal for the larger sites or roads that need clearing. This attachment is capable of spreading wet or dry grit or white salt with ease.

We also offer a snow blade clearer that is perfect for clearing roads and compounds. If you are interested in this or any of our snow clearing equipment or have any questions, then please  give us a call on 01908 562191, email us at [email protected] or contact us using our online form today.
